CONGENITAL
DEFORMITIES
"Love
of life is next to our face and thus the mutilated cry for help" - Sushruta
Sarmita in 600 BC.
A
Congenital malformation, sufficient to endanger life or unsightly enough
ot justify treatment. Congenital malformations have been recognised
and recovered from time immemorial.A Congenital malformed baby is born
some where in the world every 30 seconds. These anomalies are the end result
of complex processes during development. The clear cut answers to
the question of etiology are not always available. During the first
few week of development, especially during the 6th to 12th weeks of infra-uterine
life, mostmalformations occur, the environment of the embryo is determined
by the mother and may be influenced by maternal impressions, infections,
nutritional deficiencies, drugs and radiation defects.
Hereditary
is found to be one of the major causative factors.Consanguineous
marriage is found to be another important adiological factor.Popular education
of the Public regarding the causes of birth defects is necessary.
Wide dissemination of this knowledge would help present avoidance of incriminating
factors where possible.
